Building the Capacity of the Netroots
American politics is at the beginning of a massive change. a change fueled by the energy and creativity that technology and new media has unleashed. Bloggers,videographers, text messages, and remarkable organizations like MoveOn.org and ActBlue are on the verge of transforming politics in a more fundamental way than even TV advertising did in the 1950’s and ‘60s. The impact of the netroots in the 2006 election cycle was tremendous, and we expect that the role of the netroots in 2008 and beyond will continue to grow exponentially. 2008 will be an important and competitive campaign year for progressives, with races to keep control of the House and Senate, and the presidential race which is already under way. It is critical that we harness the power and energy of the netroots community as their networks continue to grow.
Building the capacity of the netroots is one of AFV’s most important strategic goals for 2007-08. We will be working in collaboration with two new partners: ActBlue, an online fundraising giant that raised over $16.8 million online for progressive candidates and causes from non-traditional political donors in 2006, and BlogPAC which was formed to provide financial support progressive bloggers and online activists who are doing important work. Through this partnership, we will bring together the best strategic ideas of the netroots and of more established players of the progressive movement, exponentially expand the ability of the progressive community to raise money, recruit volunteers, and shape the political debate in this country.
